1934: Diesel Streamliner Service
Comes to the “Overland” Route.

UPRR 57-Hour Mail, 1934 After 65 years of exclusively steam locomotion on the “Overland” route from Chicago to San Francisco, in 1934 the Union Pacific introduced dieseleletric powered streamliner service for the first time. (On October 22, 1934, 57-hour transcontinental mail service by rail was also introduced using this new high-speed train.) To help introduce this new service to the public, The UP published a14-page illustrated booklet eititled “Progress” which is shown in full below. -BCC
